service

the past few weekends i have been volunteering a lot. yesterday i volunteered at the CIS Food Distribution that gives lunches to elementary students of low economic status. it was great to go to the school and see all the kids' eyes get big when they saw the "big kids" walking through the school.

today i went to the louisville lake aquatic research center and reserve (a 2,000 acre reserve) to help return the land to it's natural state before it was destroyed by vegetation that was brought over from europe during the 1700's and 1800's. we worked for 3 hours in a forest area removing the alien brush.

it was almost meditative- it was so completely quiet.

no cars, loud talking, or cell phones ringing), just the birds happily chirping and the sound of the wind rustling through the trees. the weather was chilly at first, but the rest of the time it was in the 50's and 60's. and working in the shade of the trees kept us cool. i absolutely loved it. not only were the coordinators completely passionate about the restoration, but the hard manual labor made me feel like i was actually making a big difference. like building a house or something. and when we were done, we could see how much we had cleared and it was very satisfying (and totally tiring). i was glad i could return the land to the state it belonged in. i plan on working with them again.

so i guess my question for the reader is:
what have YOU done to serve your community lately?

have you been taking time to help others, or have you maybe been a little too wrapped up in your own agenda? i ask that you take a little time out of this coming week to serve your community and make the world a better place. i enjoy working on helping the environment because the environment can't speak for itself- it can't cry or ask for help. and helping the environment helps EVERYONE- the birds, the trees, people, children, animals- everything.

SPREAD THE LOVE!

oak, dreams, and the sea

before i get started- i wanted to say that i hate using capital letters in informal documents such as facebook ect. therefore, my blog will always consist of lowercase unless i am mentioning a book or movie and such.

yesterday my sculpture class started our woodworking project. a friend told me about a huge wood pile in the front yard of someone's house, so i drove to the house and had mariel's boyfriend, john, help me carry a chunk of the oak into my trunk. i swear it weighed 50lbs. but it is gorgeous. i love the organic structure and the irregularities. the wood is in almost perfect condition (from what i can see).

i will honor it by enhancing it's natural beauty.

it will be amazing.

what would it be like if the older you got, the taller you grew. so the elderly would be like walking giants, redwood trees. slow walking magnificent redwood trees. i think people would respect them more.

i had an awesome dream the other day. i usually don't like to share my dreams because they are personal, but this one was stellar. the setting is an empty room. like an empty ballroom. i am watching myself in the dream, like watching a movie. travis and i are slow-dancing in the ballroom- naked. completely naked. completely comfortable with each other and absorbed in each other (even though i caught him checking out my butt a couple times ;) ). being naked can be seen as a symbol of the true self, the ultimate truth. therefore i think this dream is a very positive symbolic interpretation of our relationship.

here is a cool quote i found while reading Chopin's The Awakening. it's pretty much EXACTLY how i feel when i am in the ocean:

"The voice of the sea is seductive; never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation. The voice of the sea speaks to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace."

mmmm..... i am so ready for hawaii
